Who was Ted Murray in EastEnders and what happened to him?

EastEnders fans can revisit one of the soap’s most iconic episodes this evening, as the instalment featuring Walford’s first ever Pride ceremony re-airs on BBC One.

With the soap having been forced to halt production amid the Covid-19 pandemic, episodes were rationed out to keep it on air.

However, with the final pre-lockdown episode having aired on June 16, the serial drama was forced to go off the air for the first time ever.

In order to ensure viewers get a regular Walford fix, iconic episodes are being re-shown on Tuesday evenings in a primetime BBC One slot.

Tonight’s classic episode is Pride — the soap’s 5,949th episode, which originally aired last year.

Ted Murray (Christopher Timothy) — who’s no longer in Walford — features tonight, but just who is he and what happened to him?

Who was Ted in EastEnders?

Ted — better known to Bernie (Clair Norris) as Mr. Murray — made his first appearance in 2017, when he arrived in Albert Square with love of his life Joyce (Maggie Steed).

Sharon, Ted and Joyce in EastEnders
Ted and wife Joyce moved into Albert Square in 2017 (Picture: BBC)

The couple had previously lived in Walford Towers, but were re-housed — hence their arrival on the Square — and they were devastated to realise that they’d moved into the flat below the Taylor clan.

However, in spite of the Taylors allegedly having made their friend Joan’s life a living hell when they lived opposite her, the clan ended up friends with Ted and Joyce,

Ted struck up a friendship with Bernie, as he taught her how to play chess.

Tragedy struck for Ted when Joyce died in her sleep in early 2018.

Throughout much of his stint on the soap, he was friends with Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker).

What happened to Ted in EastEnders?

Ted was ultimately set up by Patrick’s wife Sheree (Suzette Llewellyn) — with her mum Wanda Baptiste (Anna Domingo).

In spite of initial concerns about moving on from Joyce, Ted decided to throw caution to the wind, and therefore both he and Wanda headed off travelling.

Ted made his final appearance in episode 5, 997 — which aired on September 27 2019.

We heard his voice on the phone several episodes later.

EastEnders fans are being taken back in time to last year tonight, as the iconic Pride episode is airing on BBC One.

With the soap having been forced to halt production amid the Covid-19 pandemic, episodes were rationed out to keep it on air.

However, with the final pre-lockdown episode having aired on June 16, the serial drama was forced to go off the air for the first time ever.

In order to ensure viewers get their weekly Walford fix, iconic episodes from days gone by are being re-shown on Tuesday evenings in a primetime BBC One slot.

The classic Den and Angie two-hander was first, followed by Sharongate, then Syed and Amira’s unforgettable wedding, and now it’s the wonderful Pride episode from last year.

What happened during Pride?

Walford celebrated its first ever Gay Pride party last year — in the 5,949th edition of the soap — and it was a big day for several of Albert Square’s finest residents.

Bernie Taylor (Clair Norris) embraced who she truly is, with some assistance from Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White).

Callum in EastEnders
(Picture: BBC)

Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway (Tony Clay) — who’d been struggling with his sexuality — shared a romantic moment with Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) on the evening before, something which Stuart (Ricky Champ) had witnessed.

Stuart confronted his brother on the matter, who revealed that he and Ben had succumbed to their desires on one occasion.

Callum begged Stuart to not get involved, but he ultimately did just that, as — while the residents of Albert Square enjoyed the celebrations — the aggressive Highway brother met with Ben in the Arches, and left him in a bad way after carrying out a brutal attack.

What happened after Pride?

Ben sported several injuries as a result of the beating he’d taken at Stuart’s hands, and Calum was devastated to learn of what had transpired.

The attack resulted in Ben telling Callum that he ‘ain’t worth the hassle.’

Ben in EastEnders

Months passed, and Ben and Callum were unable to resist the chemistry between them.

Unable to keep his night of passion with Ben a secret from fiancee Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), Callum ultimately revealed the truth on the night before their wedding.

Whitney tried her best to go through with the ceremony, but she was ultimately unable to do so, and the truth about Callum’s romance with Ben was subsequently brought to light following the siege in the Queen Vic — in which Callum cradled a wounded Ben.

In spite of Stuart’s evident homophobia, he ultimately accepted Callum for who he is once he realised that he almost lost him amid the siege.

Ben and Callum ultimately made a go of things — in spite of a few obstacles here and there! — as Callum fully embraced who he is in powerful scenes in the soap’s 5,999th instalment — exactly 50 episodes after Pride.

No, you’re crying.

Martine Deveraux (Kelle Bryan) discovered that Felix Westwood (Richard Blackwood) had been abused in Hollyoaks, and as they discussed the past, passion ensued.

With Felix’s behaviour on the previous day having raised her suspicions, Martine was determined to find out what was going on with him.

When she discovered via Lisa (Rachel Adedeji) that the police had arrived at his door, her interest was piqued and therefore she headed round to confront him on the matter.

However, Felix deflected her questions, and thus invited Lisa to be his plus one to Mitchell’s (Imran Adam) wedding.

Meanwhile, Brody (Adam Woodward) decided to confront Felix — revealing that it was he who reported his historic abuse at Cormac’s (James Gaddas) hands to the police.

Felix wasn’t pleased, but Martine had overheard the two men’s argument, and was shocked to discover that Felix had been abused.

She encouraged him to open up, and he did so — revealing how Cormac tormented him for years and made him feel worthless.

Martine comforted him, and — as a hopeful Lisa awaited his presence at The Loft — Felix kissed Martine, and passion ensued as a result.

Will Lisa find out what’s transpired?

Holby City review with spoilers: A devastating blow for Essie as Fletch also has a setback

Fletch in Holby City
Fletch fears the worst (Picture: BBC)

There was an ominous start to this week’s Holby City, setting the scene for what proved to be a worrying time for Nicky (Belinda Owusu), Fletch (Alex Walkinshaw), Essie (Kaye Wragg) and Guy Self (John Michie).

The action then went back to ‘Week 1,’ and events played out over a three or four week span at the end of which there was good news for some – and terrible news for others.

Nicky started the episode on Darwin, but as a patient. She was still recovering from her heart attack, but her main concern was whether Jac (Rosie Marcel) would ever let her return to work. So she went to see her, and Jac wasn’t encouraging, telling her to look at the stresses in her life and ask herself if it was worth it.

But was Jac talking about work stresses, or things closer to home? Or things actually at home, as Nicky’s mum Useless Tracey (Cathy Murphy) had moved into the flat Nicky shares with Cameron (Nic Jackman) and Chloe (Amy Lennox) to ‘look after her.’

And she’s got herself a job in Pulses, so there’s no escape from her. Tracey did seem genuinely worried about Nicky, trying to convince her to scale down her ambitions and live a ‘smaller life’ – maybe by joining the family business of petty crime and scrounging.

Self in Holby City
Seeing things that other people miss (Picture: BBC)

Eventually Nicky was allowed back to work and even managed to make a ninja-level diagnosis that impressed Jac. It was clear that Jac’s harsh words to Nicky were always designed to get her to be the best doctor she can be and when Nicky tried to resign Jac had no intention of accepting.

But Jac, herself the daughter of a useless mother, advised Nicky that she needed to stand on her own two feet – and Nicky told Tracey she was going to do just that. Her decision was also helped by Tracey having sub-let their family home to a man who’d accidentally set fire to it with a heater – but luckily his ensuing injuries had led to Nicky’s impressive diagnosis earlier so it wasn’t all bad.

As Nicky recovered from her heart attack, we had two other characters anxiously worrying about their own health.

Fletch discovered he wasn’t out of the woods yet following his cancer surgery and he had a stressful wait for some test results.

Sacha and Essie in Holby City
It’s not looking good (Picture: BBC)

When Hanssen (Guy Henry) delivered the news that he was all clear there was massive relief – and Fletch even hugged Hanssen, he was so happy. It was just a shame that we didn’t get to see Hanssen’s face while this was going on.

We didn’t hear what oncologist Dr Nayam (Nicholas Khan) said to Essie and Sacha (Bob Barrett), but we saw the meeting through the window, and from everyone’s body language it looked like the news was even worse than they were expecting.

Barring a last minute miracle (which does happen quite regularly on Holby, after all), things are not looking good for Essie.

On AAU, Guy Self was on a mission to prove he’s still a brilliant neurosurgeon. When he decided that a patient needed a high-risk operation Max (Jo Martin) accused him of doing it just to show off.

‘I see things that other people miss,’ he said, showing off. The operation was one of those where the patient is awake as the surgeon prods about in his brain, which is a scary idea even when things go well. Sadly things didn’t go well and the patient died. ‘You did all you could,’ Donna (Jaye Jacobs) consoled Selfie.

‘All I could? Not enough, then,’ he replied. At Albie’s he told Donna that she shouldn’t make a habit of having an after work large glass of red.

So despite Donna being strapped for cash since Zav died, she left the entire drink untouched and went home instead, leaving Selfie contemplating temptation – and Ric (Hugh Quarshie) contemplating Selfie with a big glass of wine in front of him.

Sue Haasler is the author of five novels and the official BBC Holby City book, which you can read about here.

Harriet and Malone in Emmerdale

DI Malone (Mark Womack) suggests that he and Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) would be better off departing Emmerdale and starting afresh elsewhere — but will she agree?

Harriet has been having a secret steamy affair with Malone behind an unsuspecting Will’s (Dean Andrews) back.

She’s attempted to put a stop the affair time and again, but has ultimately been unable to do so — in spite of her having agreed to marry Will.

Given Malone’s devilish actions over the last couple of months, there’s conflict ahead for Harriet, as Cain (Jeff Hordley) reveals his intention to make the bent copper pay, as he believes he was responsible for what happened to Moira (Natalie J Robb).

Harriet does her utmost to make him see otherwise — claiming that Malone had nothing to do with the accident.

Harriet and Malone in Emmerdale
(Picture: ITV)

Speaking of Malone, he later arrives in the village once more, and reveals that he simply cannot allow Harriet to marry Will, as he loves her too much to lose her.

Harriet is floored, and she’s taken aback once more when he reveals that he thinks they should just leave the village and start anew elsewhere.

How will Harriet react?

Will she say yes?

Or is her place in the village?

Regardless of what her answer will be, there’s tragedy afoot later in the week, as Malone and Will get into a fight, and one of them is left lying lifeless on the floor.

But which is it?

Alya Nazir (Sair Khan) begin to worry that Yasmeen (Shelley King) is starting to believe Geoff Metcalfe’s (Ian Bartholomew) lies once more in Coronation Street.

Geoff nicked Alya’s phone so that he could offer Yasmeen a proposition, and thus — upon speaking to her — revealed that he’d be willing to forgive her and drop all charges if she agreed to be his wife again.

Yasmeen wasn’t convinced that he was being all that genuine, and therefore hung up.

However, Geoff later headed to the police station, where he told DS Abney (Fiona Skinner) that he wanted the charges against his wife to be dropped.

DS Abney told him the CPS gets to make the final call on this case, so therefore there’s not much she can do.

Andrea Tate (Anna Nightingale) takes advantage of her position in Emmerdale, as she threatens Jamie (Alexander Lincoln).

With Jamie having confessed to being responsible for the hit and run that left Moira (Natalie J Robb) fighting for her life, Andrea has him right where she wants him.

Earlier this week, we saw her convince him to give their relationship another shot, but he was horrified to learn Moira was the victim of the hit and run and headed to the hospital — where he came face-to-face with Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper).

Andrea successfully managed to get him back home before he confessed, but Belle’s interest was piqued by Andrea’s presence in the village.

The young woman headed to Home Farm, where she confronted Andrea — who revealed that her and Jamie are giving things another go.

Belle was devastated, and Andrea had succeeded in getting what she wanted.

However, Belle later sets her sights upon the so-called happy couple in the cafe and rushes off.

Andrea warns Jamie to stay put, but he fails to follow such an order and catches up with Belle, who explains that he needs to make a choice.

Hollyoaks is going back in time once more, as it revisits a series of instalments from days gone by.

The Channel 4 soap was forced to shut down production amid the Covid-19 pandemic, and episodes were subsequently rationed out in an effort to ensure it remains on air.

With only two instalments airing a week, the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday slots on E4 have been filled with older episodes which aim to revisit the best of Chester’s best.

However, it’s been confirmed that current episodes of the soap will run out next week — meaning that it’ll be forced to go off the air. Therefore, a fourth Favourite will be on offer on the week in question.

Thus far, Favourites has revisited iconic instalments such as Mercedes’ wedding to Doctor Browning, and the train and bus crashes from earlier in the decade — as well as entire weeks devoted to icons such as Tony Hutchinson, Clare Devine, Cindy Cunningham, Brendan Brady and everyone’s favourite ship, McDean.

This week, it’s Hannah Ashworth’s (Emma Rigby) battle with bulimia and anorexia, which originally aired in 2007.

Tuesday 21 July

Episode 2118

Hannah (Emma Rigby) desperately tries to convince her family that she’s on the road to recovery. She helps Melissa break out of hospital and they plan to escape the village but are stopped in their tracks when tragedy strikes. Meanwhile, Fletch is struggling to cope with the pressure of dating two girls at once, Sarah is excited to move to Dublin with Craig, and Jessica buckles under a mountain of unpaid bills.

Episode 2119

Hannah (Emma Rigby) struggles to accept what’s happened to her friend, Melissa. Realizing the extent of Hannah’s anorexia, Sarah and Nancy assure her that they’ll help her through it. Elsewhere, as Sasha and Leo sit down to a quiet meal, their evening is interrupted as a suitcase comes smashing through the window and Leo is forced to make a shocking admission.

Thursday 23 July

Episode 2130

Hannah (Emma Rigby) attempts to blot over the last few weeks with a dramatic new look, but whilst John Paul and Sarah are arguing, Hannah has a panic attack and passes out. Suzanne frantically searches for clues that she has been hiding food. Meanwhile, Frankie’s finding it hard to deal with Craig’s departure, and Steph has Max on her mind, but she insists she doesn’t fancy him.

Friday 24 July

Episode 2132

Hannah (Emma Rigby)’s condition is clearly deteriorating but Suzanne is at a loss as to how to help her daughter.  Rhys tries to reason with her, reminding her of the bubbly, happy girl she used to be.  Meanwhile, Sarah and Amy squabble over who should babysit Leah whilst Mike is away, and Katy is in for a shock when she discovers that she’s not registered on the law course at school.

Ever since meeting sex worker Nicky Wheatley (Kimberly Hart-Simpson), Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) has been enamoured by her and using her company as an outlet for his ongoing grief over his lost wife Sinead in Coronation Street.

While Daniel has tried all he can to overcome the agony of losing Sinead, it’s clear that his road to recovery is a long one as he isolates himself while missing her terribly.

Viewers have ached for him after seeing him talk sadly and wistfully to her photograph – so a turning appoint seemed to be on the horizon when he met bubbly and fun loving Nicky at a drinks party and she paid an interest in him.

They enjoyed one another’s company but when it got to the stage of taking the night further, Nicky reeled off her charges and Daniel was mortified that he would be paying.

Daniel later re-established his contact with Nicky and opened up to her in her hotel room about his life with Sinead and Bertie and how much he misses his wife. He found the session therapeutic and paid for her company.

In upcoming scenes, he will visit her again, this time taking along a cardigan Sinead used to wear. After getting an advance on his wages he pays Nicky again and she reminds him that he can get so much more for his money as she makes amorous advances.

But Daniel reiterates that this has nothing to do with sex for him – he just finds her company helpful as he tries to keep Sinead alive in his memories.

But how long before Nicky becomes uncomfortable with this arrangement? And is this unhealthy means of working through his grief going to create more problems for Daniel long term?

Emmerdale star Zoe Henry recalls filming ‘horrendous’ scene with husband Jeff Hordley

(Picture ITV/Metro.co.uk)

Emmerdale star Zoe Henry has recalled how filming a particular scene with husband and co-star Jeff Hordley was ‘horrendous’.

The actress — who portrays Rhona Goskirk — reminisced about a moment in the ITV soap in which her character admitted that her secret crush is none other than Cain Dingle — who is played by husband Jeff.

She told Inside Soap: ‘I thought it was hilarious when we found out that Cain is actually Rhona’s secret crush!’

However, that’s not the only scene that Zoe discussed, as she also made reference the one in which Rhona tried it on with Cain.

Zoe continued: ‘There was another scene after Pierce had gone [the first time], where Rhona got a bit drunk and tried it on with Cain in the Woolpack.

‘That was horrendous to film, as I was so nervous about having to work with Jeff!’

This isn’t the first time Zoe has spoken about working with Jeff, as she previously told Inside Soap: ‘I think we probably both prefer not to work together!

‘Of course we enjoy each other’s company, yet I think we quite enjoy each other’s independence at work.

‘I don’t know how well Rhona and Cain would get on, either – although I can see why it’s a source of amusement for people if we’re in the same scenes!’

The characters will feature together in a scene during tonight’s episode, as Cain comes to discover Rhona’s secret partnership with Nate Robinson (Jurrell Carter).

After a difficult year things are about to change for the better for Mackenzie Hargreaves (Georgie Stone) as the day she’s been dreaming of finally arrives in Neighbours.

It’s been such an important year for her, one of huge highs and terrible lows. She learned the devastating truth about Shane’s (Nick Coghlan) involvement in her being disowned by her dad, that was followed by the high of her experiencing her first kiss with Hendrix (Benny Turland), a moment she’d never forget.

She later had to face the fallout of being unceremoniously outed as transgender by Yashvi (Olivia Junkeer) which left her living in fear after parents at the school reacted badly to the news, calling for her to be banned from using the girl’s toilets. But now she’s been able to build bridges with her dad, has made so many close friends in Ramsay Street, and has a good thing going with Richie (Lachlan Millar).

So to cap it all off, when the day of her gender confirmation surgery arrives she is beyond excited.

But it’s tinged with sadness knowing Shane and Dipi’s marriage still isn’t back on track. They’re the two people who have helped her the most to get her to this point, so she makes one last ditch attempt to try and help them. Will it be enough to help them fix things?

Emmerdale star Natalie J Robb has opened on up on her ‘lockdown love-in’ with co-star Jonny McPherson as the pair sparked a romance online.

The pair – who play Moira Dingle and Dr Liam Cavanagh on the soap – have now gone public with their romance after initially getting together in January.

Due to the lockdown kicking off in March, the pair took the plunge and moved in together for the duration of quarantine, giving them an unexpected fast track in their blooming relationship.

Quizzed about her new beau on Loose Women today, Natalie admitted that it wasn’t on their plans to move in so quickly, but it kind of fell into place.

‘Our first date was in mid January, and then we were just having a couple of dates in February and then obviously March lockdown happened,’ she told the panel. ‘And we were together at the time that Boris Johnson announced it.

‘So we’re like, “oh”. So he’s been kind of staying with me, and then they were saying, yes, it could be three weeks. Yes, it might be six weeks. I was like, “Oh, okay!”‘

Opening up about their romance, she revealed they got together while working on a charity trip to Lapland.

‘We were on that, and it’s a day trip, so you’re there back in a day, and from then on we just sort of got to know each other better,’ she explained. ‘I mean I’ve worked with them and things, but we’ve got to know him better and yeah just went on from there.

‘A few text messages and things like that and we went out for a meal and the rest is history.’

On how lockdown was doing, Natalie admitted that she didn’t like that he would leave lids off things, but joked: ‘We’ve had a few wobbles, I’m not going to lie… but the making up was fantastic!’

Elsewhere on the show, Natalie teased about the future of her character Moira, who is currently lying in a coma after a hit and run.

Admitting it was strange to be back on set with social distancing rules, Natalie admitted not being able to be clothes to her housemates was proving difficult.

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.

Emmerdale star Natalie J Robb admits the ‘soul’s gone out’ of filming since social distancing measures were implemented.

The actress — who portrays Moira Dingle in the ITV soap — spoke about the new social distancing rules on set, which were implemented to allow the serial drama to resume production amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

She said on Loose Women: ‘Jane Hudson our producer has implemented the two metre distancing rules and they’re taking it very very seriously, for everyone’s safety and of course so we can still continue filming.

‘But it’s just like a little bit of the soul’s gone out of it a bit, at the moment. I’m sure in time we’ll get used to it.

‘But it’s just there’s less people, we’ve obviously got distancing measures they have a two metre pole to make sure you’re not close to anybody.

‘But also it is just, I’m kind of very jovial on set so I kind of miss that side of it, the banter side of things. But I’m very lucky to be working!’

The ITV soap was one of several that was forced to shut down production amid the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year.

Following it’s shut down, episodes were rationed out in an effort to keep the serial drama on air — with three being shown weekly as opposed to the usual six and occasional seven that viewers were used to.

Production was able to resume ahead of the pre-lockdown episodes running out, and the instalments which are currently airing feature a mixture of pre-lockdown and post-lockdown footage.

Emmerdale continues Wednesday 15 July at 7pm on ITV.

Emmerdale star Paula Tilbrook — who portrayed Betty Eagleton — has died.

Paula died in December 2019, but her passing was revealed by The Stage today.

The actress made her first appearance as the village favourite Betty in 1994, and during her time on the soap, she featured in a number of popular storylines.

Betty departed the village in 2015, after it was announced that Paula would be retiring, but she made a brief return that very year amid the Christmas instalment of the ITV soap.

In addition to portraying Betty in Emmerdale, Paula also appeared in fellow soap Coronation Street, where she played four different characters — three of which appeared within a decade of one another in the 1970s.

The final Corrie character — Vivian Barford — appeared in a relatively recurring capacity between 1991 and 1993.

Paula famously portrayed another character named Betty, when she appeared in Channel 4 soap Brookside as Betty Hughes between 1984 and 1985.

Of course, the celebrated actress is best known for her performance as Emmerdale’s Betty, who swiftly became a fan-favourite upon her arrival in the village in 1994.

The character’s relationship with Seth Armstrong (Stan Richards) is largely regarded as one of the greatest ever seen in a British soap.

Emmerdale spoilers: Cain Dingle takes drastic action to silence Kim Tate as she discovers Rhona Goskirk’s secret?

Cain and Kim in Emmerdale
(Picture: ITV)

Kim Tate (Claire King) vowed to bankrupt Moira Dingle’s (Natalie J Robb) farm in Emmerdale in order to get revenge on Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry), but will Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) go to extreme lengths to prevent her from doing so?

Cain has been extremely worried about Moira since she ended up the victim of a hit and run.

He’s been at her side ever since, and waited behind even after her son Matty (Ash Palmisciano) had gone home, as he hoped and prayed that she’d be okay.

With Moira having been taken to surgery, Cain headed up to his wife’s farm — presumably to see how things were running in her absence — and he was horrified when he walked in Rhona discussing her partnership with Nate (Jurrell Carter).

Rhona explained herself, revealing that she didn’t want to hurt Moira by telling her, but the restaurant deal was too good a business opportunity to miss out on.

With Moira in hospital, Cain decided that she didn’t need any more stress, and therefore seemingly resolved to keep their secret hidden, but matters became complicated when Kim showed up.

She was fuming at Nate for conspiring with Rhona behind her back, and refused to believe that Rhona’s intentions were above board.

Therefore, she resolved to bankrupt Butlers.

Cain was none too pleased, so will he be forced to take drastic action not only to keep Kim silent, but also to ensure that Moira’s business doesn’t go down the drain while she recovers in hospital?

Will he take revenge on Kim?

If so, what does he have in mind?

Emmerdale continues Friday 17 July at 7pm on ITV.
