Emmerdale’s Priya Sharma: Relationship history and eating disorder past

Priya Sharma in Emmerdale
Fiona Wade joined as Priya in 2011 (Picture: ITV)

Priya (Fiona Wade) is one of Emmerdale’s longstanding characters, and has been through all sorts of twists and turns over the years.

Originally played by Effie Woods, the daughter of Georgia and Rishi started as a party girl in the soap in 2009, before leaving in 2010 and returning in late 2011, played by Fiona Wade.

We’ve seen multiple facets to Priya, including her strong nature and vulnerable side.

This week this will become apparent again, as Priya starts acting strange. Snapping at Jai and irritating Kim at work suggests something’s wrong.

As a result of the spotlight being back on Priya once again, let’s take a look at the trials and tribulations she’s faced throughout her time in the Dales.

Priya is stressed in Emmerdale
Priya just isn’t herself (Picture: ITV)

Priya has had something of a turbulent love life in Emmerdale.

Back in 2011, she had a casual relationship with Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), which ended in disaster after he got 17-year-old Amy Wyatt (then Chelsea Halfpenny) pregnant.

From there, she began dating David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden), who was married to Alicia Gallagher (Natalie Anderson) at the time. David’s marriage wasn’t genuine, and was so he could look after Alicia’s adopted son Jacob (Joe Warren Plant) while she was in prison. However this didn’t stop David and Alicia developing feelings for each other once she was released.

Priya was unceremoniously dumped by David on the night before they were due to get married, before finding out that she was pregnant with his baby.

This is around the time that Priya develops an eating disorder, which starts to affect her unborn child. After going to a specialist clinic, she has the baby – Amba Metcalfe.

Rakesh Kotecha (Pasha Bocarie) was her next big relationship, and although they initially met in an arranged capacity, they end up falling in love and marrying.

Infidelities and lies about money on his part mean that Priya relapses with her eating disorder, and Rakesh ends up leaving after she cheats on him.

Priya then started a relationship with Pete Barton (Anthony Quinlan), who was due to be married, cementing the fact that everyone in Emmerdale will have an affair at some point or another.

Hopefully it isn’t romantic troubles or eating worries that’s got Priya upset right now. Either way, something isn’t right.

Priya is stressed in Emmerdale
(Picture: ITV)

The behaviour of Priya Kotecha (Fiona Wade) has been concerning Emmerdale viewers tonight as she has been on edge, snappy and hiding away from people. So what is wrong with her? Is she hiding a secret torment? Or could recent stresses have triggered a relapse in her eating disorder?

When Jai (Chris Bisson) was meant to be watching Amba but was instead texting his new love interest Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy), Priya freaked out when her daughter got chocolate all over her face and Jai told her to calm down as Priya shouted at him that he was meant to be keeping an eye on her.

Priya seemed to be on the brink of opening up to Jai but he was then distracted by another flirty text. At work, Kim Tate (Claire King) was bemused as Priya was organising things at breakneck speed.

When Kim pointed out she didn’t need to do everything at once, Priya snapped that she just wanted the day to be organised. However, later, when Kim needed to speak to Priya, she was hiding in a darkened room looking troubled and ignored the calls.

Something is very much on her mind and impacting her behaviour. So just what is going on?

And are fans right to be worried for her?

Coronation Street spoilers: Gemma Winter’s mum steals her urine for pregnancy scam

Gemma has her pee stolen in Coronation Street
(Picture: ITV/Metro.co.uk)

It seems like the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in Coronation Street in the outrageous stakes as one of the first things Gemma Winter’s (Dolly Rose Campbell) mum will do when she arrives is steal her daughter’s urine – so that she can pretend people are pregnant. As one does.

Casualty legend Jane Hazlegrove is joining as Bernie and she instantly sees a money making route from her daughter’s delightful news that she is carrying four babies. Apparently there’s a bit of a market for positive pregnancy tests (who knew) so Bernie will reportedly swipe some of Gemma’s wee in order to dip several tests into which she will then plan to sell.

But how will Gemma and Chesney (Sam Aston) react when they find out what she is up to?

A source told The Sun Online: ‘Bernie hasn’t always been the best mother to Gemma but she’s determined to prove that she can be now that Gemma’s pregnant. She does want to be there for Gemma but she can’t help herself when she sees a money-making scam opportunity with Gemma being pregnant.

‘Bernie doesn’t see anything wrong with using Gemma to make a bit of money – even if it does mean stealing her own daughter’s wee. Bernie deliberately blocks the toilet in the house so Gemma has no choice but to use a bucket when she needs to go. She decides to team up with another street resident to cash in on the abundant supply to help others fake a pregnancy test…’

Talk about taking the p*ss.

Understandably, Chesney and Gemma will be far from impressed with Bernie’s behaviour – but can she make it up to them? Or is this just the first of many waves of chaos she is going to bring to their lives?

We already know that Bernie is going to try it on with Chesney so I think the answer to that question is fairly obvious…

EastEnders hits back at reports of a ‘ratings crisis’

Max loses it in EastEnders
(Picture: BBC)

EastEnders has defended itself against reports that they are in a ratings crisis after a last minute schedule change meant that many fans missed an episode. Due to the ongoing coverage of the Women’s World Cup football matches, EastEnders has been forced to adapt to the mercy of the channel moving things around.

Last week, Thursday’s episode was moved to 9pm on Tuesday and with most online TV guides not updating on time, there was little warning for many fans – particularly those not on Twitter – that they would miss an episode.

However, many fans soon expressed their outrage at missing their favourite soap and having the twist of Rainie Branning (Tanya Franks) fleeing with baby Abi ruined as they had been expecting to see these developments two days later.

There was even more confusion when an even more sudden change meant that Friday’s episode was shunted to a 7pm slot on Thursday, pitting it in direct competition with Emmerdale. Due to Emmerdale being in its usual slot and there being no notifications for fans that EastEnders was also airing, naturally, EastEnders lost out in the ratings battle.

Reports are now quoting the lowest five minute figure of the overnights for the episode which was 2.7 million in the last five minutes. However, Metro.co.uk understands that the episode actually finished at around 19:26pm, making this a fairly unfair figure to base things on.

Emmerdale, meanwhile, was dinted somewhat by the clash and achieved 4.6 million proving once more that clashes are never any good for any soap. However, EastEnders has already seen a huge surge of viewers catching up online and the official figures may be higher than what media reports are quoting once they are released.

It’s fair to say that a one off dipped figure in an out of slot, unadvertised episode which clashed with a rival soap in its own usual slot does not warrant any fears for BBC bosses. A spokesperson for EastEnders told Metro.co.uk: ‘With the growing popularity of this year’s Women’s World Cup, it was decided that BBC One viewers should have the opportunity to watch as many of the matches as possible.

‘Although this meant a late schedule change for EastEnders this week, we are confident that our audience know they can watch EastEnders on BBC iPlayer as we have already seen a significant number of viewers watching this week’s episodes.’

The sheer fact that so many fans were so vocally upset at missing out (not to mention the many emails and tweets we have had asking where people can find when EastEnders is next on) proves that ratings were not down through lack of interest.

Rainie saw Max and Mel kissing on EastEnders
(Picture: BBC)

The changes are set to continue next week as Monday is set to air two episodes, with Tuesday’s episode expected to air at 9pm.

New show bosses Kate Oates and Jon Sen have been widely praised by fans and critics alike for breathing new life into the soap of late, with fast paced and exciting storylines, a range of returns, better representation of diversity and sexuality, some popular new castings and some strong cliffhangers.

EastEnders, as we recently opined in a piece from our soaps editor, is truly on fire at the moment. And when we can actually find it in the schedules, it is seemingly the general consensus that the show is in its strongest place for years.

Justin (James Stewart), Tori (Penny McNamee) and Mason (Orpheus Pledger) prepare for court (Picture: Channel 5)

Mason (Orpheus Pledger) has been anxiously awaiting his court date after being arrested for possession of marijuana and potentially facing charges for trafficking to a minor. With the medical trial of CBD oil for Raffy (Olivia Deeble) now on hold, and his little sister beginning to suffer from seizures again while she waits to see if she’ll be accepted onto an official trial, Mason has been getting more and more frustrated.

Following the publication of his article in the local paper about why people should support medical marijuana, Tori (Penny McNamee) and Justin (James Stewart) have been trying to convince him to keep his head down until the hearing – which was then moved to a much earlier date. After going to see the lawyer, Mason discovered he would have a much better chance of succeeding if he had a medical professional speak out in support of the oil, but Tori was initially reluctant to help him out.

Fortunately, she has since come round, but as there’s no guarantee what the result will be, the Morgans are left feeling nervous on the morning of his court case/sentencing hearing. While Mason appreciates the support, he’s too nervous to eat, despite Raffy trying to make him something. However, he’s more confident knowing he has Tori’s letter of support.

As Mason leaves, he comforts Raffy and assures her that everything will be OK, but she isn’t convinced, blaming herself for the hearing and feeling she would be responsible if he was sent to prison. She starts to catastrophize as she waits for Mason to return from court, and although Marilyn tries to comfort her, Raffy says that everyone she loves is leaving her.

When Mason finally returns with Justin and Tori, he reveals the good news – he’s a free man. He won’t have a criminal conviction recorded, and was instead given a section 10. Brody (Jackson Heywood) invites the family to a celebratory lunch at Salt, but Tori is confused to find Mason looking pensive at the bar.

She asks why he doesn’t look in the mood to celebrate, and he says that, although he’s glad he received a lenient sentence, Raffy still has a long way to go when it comes to managing her epilepsy – and he’s not finished fighting for medical marijuana…

Brody (Jackson Heywood) and Simone (Emily Eskell) have been considering a move away from Summer Bay for several weeks now, especially in light of the fact that Ziggy’s (Sophie Dillman) family clearly don’t want Brody around and Simone was suffering in her job at the school, especially with Maggie (Kestie Morassi) as her boss. After taking a flight to look at a new property out in the Yarra Valley, the pair return as Tori (Penny McNamee) is reading out her court speech for Mason (Orpheus Pledger) to the Morgans.

When asked about the trip, Brody is deliberately vague, and Tori immediately picks up on this – but is too distracted by Mason’s upcoming court case to question him right away. Meanwhile, the pair prepare for a smooth transition as Salt awaits its new owner, and Simone asks when Brody is going to break the news to his family.

Brody says he’s stalling until Mason is back from court – and then he’ll tell them: he and Simone have bought the property in the Yarra Valley, and they’re moving to Victoria….tomorrow.

Raffy is played by Olivia Deeble

When Mason returns from court, the family are at Salt when they ask him when the new owner will be taking over. Brody finally reveals his news, and the Morgans are pleased for him – until they learn how far away he’ll be moving. Raffy (Olivia Deeble) can’t deal with the news and storms out, with Mason following after. Tori and Justin (James Stewart) also struggle to deal with the news, while Brody tries to get his family to be happy for him.

Simone hands her caravan keys back in the diner, and reveals that she and Brody are moving. But Raffy storms in as she does so, determined to vent her anger. She tells Simone that she’s tearing their family apart. Mason tries to intervene, but Raffy won’t stop having a go at her.

Later on, Brody is feeling unsettled by his family’s lack of support. He tells Simone they should just pack up their things and leave tonight. Simone tells him he can’t just abandon his family without saying a proper goodbye – but will he listen?

Dean (Patrick O’Connor) tells them they should go home and make sure Ziggy’s OK, and leaves a voicemail for her while he looks after the shop. However, when they arrive home, Ziggy is studying and doesn’t seem bothered by Brody’s departure. When Maggie tells her she doesn’t have to cover up her feelings, Ziggy lashes out and tells her parents to get off her case before going to her room.

When Dean’s closed the shop, he sneaks into Ziggy’s room through her window to see if she’s OK. But Ziggy responds by trying to seduce him, to take her mind off the situation. When Dean refuses, she gets angry and kicks him out, leaving him feeling rejected.

Later, he tries again, and finds Ziggy upset. He opens up, declaring he’s serious about their relationship. This leads to Ziggy finally revealing how upset she is about Brody leaving, breaking down in Dean’s arms….

Yasmeen and Geoff in Coronation Street
(Picture: ITV)

As the sinister behaviour of Geoff Metcalfe continues to increase, with his control of Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) stepping up, Coronation Street is launching a coercive domestic abuse storyline and actor Ian Bartholomew has warned of dark scenes ahead. Admitting that he knew from the outset that Geoff had a darker edge to him, Ian has praised the show for the slow burn nature of the plotline.

With viewers just at the beginning of what is a harrowing journey for Yasmeen, they will watch in horror as Geoff takes over every aspect of her life and chips away at her self confidence, all while isolating her from her friends and gaslighting her into thinking she is the unreasonable one.

Ian said: ‘I knew when I was first brought in to the programme as Tim’s dad that the character might turn a bit dark so it wasn’t unexpected. For the first few months it was “nice Geoff”, “funny Geoff” and “silly Geoff”. But now it is slowly starting to become apparent that there is something missing in Geoff’s psychological make-up. As an acting exercise and something for an actor to get his teeth in to, it is going to be interesting but it is also a privilege to be trusted with such an important storyline that I hope will make a difference.

‘It is something that happens in our society much more than we understand, it is very prevalent. Highlighting something like coercive control, I hope it will make people who are perpetrators of this abuse think about their behaviour but I also hope it gives victims of this sort of behaviour a way of realising that they are not alone and if it helps them do something about it then we have achieved something very important.’

Speaking of the unsettling moments to come as his behaviour gets worse, he added: ‘We have been trying to feed small clues without being obvious because that is what is true to real life. He is misguided which becomes unpleasant and then we will see the true extent of his behaviour in how the story develops. There have been a few pointers that Geoff hasn’t always been Mr Nice Guy from very early on.’

Jacob is sad in Casualty
Family news (Picture: BBC)

It was a sad day for Jacob (Charles Venn) on Casualty when he had to say goodbye to his mother, Omo (Ellen Thomas). He’d been looking after her at home, but while he was at work she fell and broke her hip. At the hospital Dylan (William Beck) discovered that Omo’s cancer had spread to her bones and he felt it was now a case of making her as comfortable as possible. Jacob refused to give up and persuaded Omo to have more treatments and tests.

Eventually Omo told her son she didn’t want to die in the hospital and wanted to go home. She died in bed with Jacob by her side, holding on to precious souvenirs of a happy day they’d spent at the seaside when Jacob was little. It was a moving and emotional farewell, with tender little details like the jar of seashells that Omo keeps by her bed. ‘You were like a maraca,’ she said, remembering carrying little Jacob home with his pockets full of shells.

Last week Jacob discovered that his father wasn’t dead, as he’d previously believed. He wanted to know about him and Omo told him that he’d been selfish and only cared about himself, appearing and disappearing randomly and upsetting Jacob every time until she told him never to come back. She said that his details were in the back of her Bible but she didn’t want Jacob to look until after she was gone. The first thing he did after she died was to take the piece of paper out of the Bible and burn it without looking at it, apparently content that Omo had given him all the love he needed. So he’s not going to actively look for the elder Masters, but I still wouldn’t rule out seeing him in the ED one day.

Meanwhile, Connie (Amanda Mealing) was worried that Archie might say something to Ciaran to get her into trouble, so she got Will to keep an eye on her. When Archie (Genesis Lynea) was about to do a delicate procedure on someone’s eye, Will (Jack Nolan) pulled rank and said she should assist, even though she had experience of doing the procedure and he didn’t. Archie had to tell him what to do, and if she hadn’t he might have made a nasty mistake.

Archie in Casualty
Archie’s feeling isolated (Picture: BBC)

Afterwards they had a furious row. She was angry he took the procedure off her and would have screwed it up without her help. He accused her of undermining him. ‘I’m not the one making mistakes!’ she shot back, and whether this was directed at him or Connie or both, it was overheard by Mrs Beauchamp. ‘What did you just say?’ she said in her iciest voice. She told Archie that from now on she’ll be auditing all her notes.

Archie now doesn’t trust Connie at all, with good reason, and called Ciaran (Rick Warden) rather than clinical lead Connie when a senior staff member was required. Later, she went to talk to Ciaran and told him about Connie’s mistake with the intubation a few weeks ago. Ciaran took her complaints seriously, unlike Will – but warned that they’ll have to tread carefully and Connie won’t make it easy. Is Connie’s downfall imminent?

Sadie is shocked in Hollyoaks

Between being prime suspect in a police investigation and the disintegration of his relationship with James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan), Harry Thompson (Parry Glasspool) certainly hasn’t had an easy couple of months in Hollyoaks — but will his ex Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson) be able to ease his suffering?

This year began rather well for Harry, what with him winning back James’ affection, but things started to fall apart after his brand new car — a present from James, no less — was used in the hit-and-run which left Grace Black (Tamara Wall) fighting for her life. Of course, viewers know that Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) and Liam (Jude Monk McGowan) were the culprits, but they’ve managed to evade justice thus far, leaving Harry in the firing line.

Harry’s ex, Sadie Cressington (Alexa Lee), is the only one who can get him off the hook — what with the young lad having been in her company when the accident took place — but she’s not overly keen on helping him out.

In an attempt to get her to see sense, Ste (Kieron Richardson) calls up Sadie in the coming episodes to inform her that Harry is dying. Of course, he’s not really dying — it’s all part of an elaborate scheme on Ste’s part to ensure Sadie returns to the village. The plan works, as she agrees to meet.

However, when Harry shows up to the meeting, Sadie realises it’s all been a set-up.

Having fled with the baby as well as money belonging to Jack (Scott Maslen) and Max (Jake Wood), Rainie is determined that she deserves better than the way Max treated her.

With Abi being the only member of the household she cares about, she kidnapped her and made it clear to Max he had lost his granddaughter forever. With Max knowing that if he involved the police then Abi would be taken into care, he has decided to try and track Rainie down himself.

But Rainie might end up ruining her own plan as she sneaks into the Branning household when it is empty to grab the toy. Unfortunately for her, Jack unexpectedly arrives home and catches her clutching baby Abi.

Jasmine (Sam Frost) and Robbo (Jake Ryan) have recently reunited following Robbo’s return to the Bay, and the pair are eagerly planning their wedding now that the engagement is back on. With Tori’s (Penny McNamee) pregnancy also progressing, there is a lot to prepare, and Jasmine returns home one day to find that Robbo is building a cradle for the baby.

Robbo says that the cradle can stay at their place for the nights when he has the baby. While Jasmine is impressed, she points out that the baby will probably be with Tori for the first few months while she breastfeeds. Robbo realises she’s right and agrees to get back to wedding planning.

Later, Jasmine is excited to receive the wedding invites, but after realising that she doesn’t know Robbo’s parents, Robbo admits that his friend Lance may not be able to make it due to his job in the Feds. Even though Jasmine pushes the issue, Robbo is clear that the only guest who matters to him is Jasmine.

While inspecting the cradle, Robbo tells Jasmine he’s going to give it Tori. But when he goes on to say that they can take it back once they have their own kids, Jasmine’s mood drops, and it’s unclear why. She tells Robbo to check whether Tori already has a crib, as there’s no point building a new one if she already has one. He offers Jasmine a lift into town, but she refuses.

At the Morgan house, Tori has been called into work, but Leah (Ada Nicodemou) and Justin (James Stewart) are on board with Robbo building a crib and matching table for the baby. Meanwhile, Roo (Georgie Parker) finds Jasmine on the pier, where she explains that the talk of having her own kids left her rattled – because she doesn’t want any.

Roo convinces Jasmine to tell Robbo the truth, and she finds the courage to reveal how she really feels about starting a family. She tells him that she understands if it’s a deal breaker, and walks away, leaving Robbo stunned…

David and Nick fight in Coronation Street
(Picture: ITV)

David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) is set to play fire with fire in his ongoing war with Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) as his brother remains set on carrying out dirty tricks to take his sibling down to prison with him in Coronation Street. As the pair face court for the theft of Audrey Roberts’ (Sue Nicholls) money, Nick is determined that David will be the one to take the bulk of the blame.

Nick is desperate to find a way out of this mess so when he mentions to Leanne Tilsley (Jane Danson) that his brain injury causes him to act recklessly, could he be considering using this as a means to try and dodge responsibility? When David hears about his brother’s latest attempt to wriggle free of blame, he is incensed and so comes up with a shocking way to fight back.

Shona Ramsey (Julia Goulding) is shocked to the core when David says that if Nick can lie in court, then so can he. When David then goes to see Imran Habeeb (Charlie de Melo) about the case, how far is he planning to go and will Nick’s chances of freedom be shattered?

Before long, the two warring siblings face their day in court. Shona has tried to get David to change his mind but it seems like he isn’t shifting – and nor is Nick.

So it will be up to a judge to decide what fate befalls them – will they be going to prison? And will David’s actions have consequences far more serious for Nick than he initially imagined?

It doesn’t look like this is a relationship that will be repaired any time soon – and things could soon get worse before they get better.

While it has been hinted that the female members of the family might have the power to bring about a ceasefire, it sounds like that resolution is a long way off.

Emmerdale is lining up new trauma for Victoria Barton (Isabel Hodgins) when her rapist Lee and his mother discover that she is pregnant with his baby. But will Wendy demand that her deplorable son gets access to his child as he continues to deny that he is guilty of assaulting Victoria.

After police broke the news that they had insufficient evidence to charge Lee for the rape, Victoria wanted to let things go but Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) went to see him at the car showroom. When he didn’t confess, they displayed posters branding him a rapist and Lee joins his mother Wendy in confronting Victoria as he has since lost his job.

Wendy initially approaches Victoria in the toilets at the Woolpack and brands her a liar, claiming that her son would never do anything like that. Victoria is so taken aback by her audacity in invading her personal space like this that she struggles to argue but Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) soon intervenes.

Later on, Wendy and Lee publicly confront Victoria again, unwilling to let the matter lie and as she seeks refuge in the Mill, they follow her. The argument continues and Victoria wants to escape the situation. But as she heads for the stairs, she stumbles and a panicked Diane (Elizabeth Estensen) blurts out that she hopes the unborn baby is okay.

As Wendy and Lee reel from the revelation that Victoria is pregnant, Diane feels awful and she has opened another whole can of worms for Victoria which means she may never shake off the haunting memory of what Lee did to her.

With stubborn Wendy clearly determined to stick around, could she launch a fight for Lee to be a part of his child’s life? And will Victoria have any power to stop them?
