So now we know. After weeks of flying into sudden rages, forgetting patients’ names, struggling with his passwords and prepping people for operations they don’t actually need, Holby City’s Ric Griffin (Hugh Quarshie) has discovered what’s wrong with him. He doesn’t have dementia, as he feared. He has a brain tumour.
This isn’t Ric’s first brush with mortality. In 2010 he was diagnosed with cancer. He had surgery but didn’t want any further treatment, planning to let nature take its course. He changed his mind, but by March 2011 it seemed that the treatment had stopped working and the cancer had spread. The only option was to have surgery that was so high-risk that the survival rate was only 5% – unless the surgeon was Henrik Hanssen, in which case the chance of not dying shot up to a not entirely reassuring 10%.
Ric wasn’t convinced by these statistics, but was persuaded to have the surgery because his daughter Jess was about to give birth and he wanted to be around to support her. The surgery was so high-risk that Ric even recorded a video for the grandchild he might never see beforehand. With the top team of Elliot Hope and Henrik Hanssen operating on him, though, he made a full recovery and woke up to meet his new grandson who’d been born as the surgeons battled to save Ric.
Now the longest-serving doctor in Holby faces another life-threatening illness – and, in a tragic parallel, it’s happening just as another Griffin family baby has been born and Darla (Naomi Katiyo) needs him to be there for her. The clues that we can glean from the Autumn trailer are not encouraging, featuring as they do Ric encountering former love Diane Lloyd (Patricia Potter) – who’s been dead since 2007!
Heavenly vision? (Picture: BBC)
The sequence has a strange, otherworldly atmosphere and there’s another quick glimpse of Diane and another figure, who may be Ric’s late son Leo (which would be incredibly poignant), dressed in angelic white, leaning over Ric – who appears to be asleep or even (dare we say it?) dead. Is Ric dreaming? Or is he dead and in some sort of afterlife?
Some hope appears in the form of new consultant neurosurgeon and hospital CEO Max McGerry (Jo Martin) who will operate on the tumour that she describes as ‘a biggie.’ Could this be the second time Ric’s life is saved by a CEO/surgeon? Fingers crossed, but as we see Max and Serena (Catherine Russell) anxiously call for the defibrillator during Ric’s surgery, accompanied by that ominous beep, things aren’t looking too good.
Holby producer Jane Wallbank has said that Ric will ‘face his mortality’ in this storyline – but are we ready to face losing Ric, Holby’s longest serving staff member?

Directly picking up after last week’s horrific events on Holby City, this episode dealt with the repercussions of Evan (Jack Ryder)’s brutal attack on Chloe (Amy Lennox). With people back at the hospital – particularly Ange (Dawn Steele) and Cameron (Nic Jackman) – blaming themselves for what happened to her, Chloe bravely took the next steps into her own hands. She decided to go with Sheena (Eve Macklin), the police officer who’d been assigned to her, to a SARC (Sexual Abuse Referral Centre). She was determined that Evan was not going to get away with raping her.
This was a brave, touching performance from Amy Lennox. Chloe was shocked, jumpy and vulnerable but there was an inner strength to her. Andy Bayliss’s script didn’t dwell on the details of Chloe’s ordeal but gave us enough so that we could feel her shock and pain. ‘I thought I was screaming. I thought it was so loud, but nothing was coming out,’ she told Sheena, who was calm and reassuring, always letting Chloe dictate the pace, trying to make things as comfortable for her as possible.
This was a contrast to the atmosphere at the hospital, where Ange and Cameron were both blaming themselves for what had happened. Ange was trying to protect Chloe by hiding the screwdriver she’d found at the scene, not wanting Evan (should he survive) to be able to say that Chloe attacked him first. When Kian (Ramin Karimloo) and Ange sorted out Evan’s obvious stab wound, Kian was surprised that his patient started to deteriorate – and a second wound was found. This was from the screwdriver.
Ange had to tell Fletch (Alex Walkinshaw) about the screwdriver and why she had it. He said she could be perverting the course of justice. Eventually he persuaded Ange that it wasn’t a great idea to try to conceal the facts. ‘Telling the truth is how we protect Chloe now,’ he insisted.
Back at the SARC, Chloe had told Sheena about the screwdriver anyway, saying that Evan had fallen on it when she tried to escape from him after she’d hidden in the bathroom. But would Evan succeed in persuading the police that he was the victim? Waking up after his surgery, that’s exactly what he tried to tell Cameron. It was clear that Evan was unrepentant about Chloe, about Sophie (Sally Scott) and about other victims.
When Evan started to deteriorate while only Cameron was in the room, Cameron muted the beeping of the machine, closed the door and waited until it was too late before he called the crash team and turned the machine back on. He knew exactly what he was doing – making up for not protecting Chloe and making sure she couldn’t be hurt again. ‘It’s over. It’s done,’ was Ange’s relieved reaction to the news of Evan’s death, but Cameron was left in pieces as he thought about his actions.
What’s he done? (Picture: BBC)
Meanwhile, Ric Griffin (Hugh Quarshie) had woken up on the floor next to his baby great-granddaughter with a wound on his head. After all the mood swings, forgetfulness and dizzy spells he finally realised he needed to find out what was wrong so he booked himself an MRI scan, saying it was a ‘teaching aid’ for his students. Later he told Cameron that he’d been scanned. ‘It’s not dementia,’ he said. ‘I have a brain tumour.’ And next week we’ll find out exactly how bad it is.

Kim Tate (Claire King) has made her fair share of enemies since returning to Emmerdale last year, but — in spite of this — few have been able to get the better of her, as she often exterminates the threat before it can cause havoc — and this is exactly what she’s set to do once more in the coming episodes, as Ryan Stocks (James Moore) gets on the wrong side of her.
With the fire at the Sharma factory having laid waste to Rishi (Bhasker Patel) and Jai’s (Chris Bisson) business, Kim wasted little time in swooping in to play the hero by offering to buy the former’s share. However, in spite of her having led the businessmen into believing that she would be nothing more than a silent partner, her true motives came to light when Al (Michael Wildman) turned up in the village.
Yes, Kim and Al made their desire to open an outdoor pursuit centre known — much to Jay’s dismay. However — given that Kim is the majority shareholder — there’s little he can do.
(Picture: ITV)
With the outdoor centre soon set to open, it’s safe to assume that Kim would be willing to do anything to ensure that her plans go ahead — and she may be set to go to extreme measures in the coming episodes as Ryan poses a risk to her new project.
Not satisfied with the outdoor centre’s disabled facilities, Ryan threatens to inform the press. Kim is fuming and thus tells Graham (Andrew Scarborough) to do whatever it takes to get Ryan on side.
If Ryan refuses to back down, could he find himself in danger?
Kim’s proven herself a force to be reckoned with since returning to the village, and has often refused to let anything stand in the way of her getting what she wants.
If her previous actions are anything to go by, then Ryan could very much be in trouble should he defy Kim.
For several months, Adam Bateman (Stephan Rahman-Huges) engaged in a steamy affair with Habiba Amhed (Rukku Nahar) behind girlfriend Honey Mitchell’s (Emma Barton) back in EastEnders, but the truth is set to be revealed in the coming episodes, as Arshad (Madhav Sharma) gets wind of the pair’s dalliance.
Following the end of her marriage to Billy (Perry Fenwick), Honey thought she’d found her soulmate in Adam. He proved to be everything she could’ve ever wanted in a man and, before long, things got serious between the pair, and they resolved to move in with one another. However, it soon became apparent that there was more to Adam’s charming demeanour than meets the eye.
(Picture: BBC)
He engaged in a steamy affair with Habiba for several months, and — in spite of a few of Walford’s finest having rumbled the pair — Honey refused to believe the rumours that the dashing dentist was playing away. Iqra (Priya Davdra) gave Habiba plenty of advice in regards to her affair, and — before long — the young woman saw the dentist’s true nature and dumped him as a result.
However, while Iqra could see through Adam’s lies, Mariam (Indira Joshi) and Arshad continue to think the world of him — something which gets on Iqra’s nerves in the coming episodes.
Yes, fed up with Arshad constantly praising the dentist, Iqra decides to reveal the truth and thus tells him that Adam cheated on Honey with Habiba.
How will Arshad process this news? He thinks the world of the young man, so this will no doubt come as a devastating blow.
What’s more, will he relay the information to Honey? After Eid celebrations, it was pretty clear that Honey was beginning to cop on to what her partner had been up to, so perhaps Arshad will feel compelled to warn her about Adam’s true nature?
Either way, the net is beginning to close in on Adam.
One to watch: Friday 11th October at 8pm on BBC One.
Stuart Highway’s (Ricky Champ) temper is set to be tested in a big way in EastEnders as drastic action from Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) puts recovering addict Rainie Branning (Tanya Franks) at serious risk. And Kathy will soon be faced with Stuart’s dark side as he brutally attacks her.
Rainie has been struggling to wean off painkillers and Stuart thought that he had succeeded in helping her by locking her up and forcing her to go cold turkey. However, worried fans have watched as she secretly pocketed cash and headed to the chemist for another fix.
A recent trailer previewing what’s ahead in Walford showed Max (Jake Wood) angrily branding Rainie an addict as he takes steps to stop her from having contact with Abi. And later on, Rainie is seen desperately scrambling around on the ground, proving just how in the grips of her addiction she is.
Kathy, who had previously been blackmailed by Rainie into supplying pills, will end up placing a huge test in Rainie’s path to gauge whether she is suitable to have Abi in her care – but this will lead to Stuart losing his cool when he blames Kathy for the state of Rainie’s situation.
Thrusting a bag of drugs in Kathy’s face, he will angrily rant at her for her actions before viciously grabbing her and pinning her against the wall, leaving her terrified. It’s clear how protective and in love with Rainie Stuart is but he takes a step too far by losing so much control and showing such aggression to Kathy.
How far will he go in order to teach her a lesson and will he just make things worse with Rainie?
The dramatic scenes will air later this month – but whether or not Rainie can be saved from the grips of her addiction remains to be seen.
Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has unveiled updated pictures following his hair transplant procedure, which he undertook at the beginning of the year. The actor, best known for playing David Platt in the soap, has explained that he had been getting ‘depressed’ about going bald – so having the transplant was, in part, for his mental health.
He also added that he hoped that it would keep doors open in his career as he shared that he would have otherwise been ruled out of auditioning for younger roles. The actor had watched himself back on Corrie and become low over seeing that his hair was ‘literally falling out.’
After that, he went to the Crown Clinic and the process began in January this year. He has now shared an update and has enthused that he is ‘thrilled’ with the results.
(Picture: Cavendish Press/Crown Clinic)
He said: ‘As an actor, my hair and my looks are crucial to my success and if I go bald then I am not going to be considered for younger roles as I get older.
‘I know a lot of actors have similar concerns to me and are desperate to cover up their baldness. We need surgical help not because we are particularly vain but to protect our livelihoods as actors.
‘It is lovely to hear the positive comments about the change in my appearance from everyone at Corrie. I have never felt more body confident and I know in taking this step I have helped my future as an actor.’
David is set to be central to an upcoming plotline as reports have suggested that he could be blamed for a stabbing when his rapist Josh Tucker (Ryan Clayton) is violently attacked during a prison riot.
David is set to come face to face with Josh when he ends up in the same prison as him.
Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) will tonight vow to stand by Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) in Coronation Street as he faces being driven out of town by vile sex abuser Kel (Joseph Alessi). With Paul having realised that Kel groomed and abused him as a teenager, he lashed out at the man he thought he loved and left him in a coma.
Billy was shocked by Paul’s actions but reasoned that he should hand himself into the police as they would understand once the truth about the child abuse came to light. When Kel came round, he told Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) that he didn’t intend to press any charges against Paul – evidently worried about the past coming to light.
However, with the family turning on him and Kel issuing a damning threat, Paul feels he has no choice but to leave Weatherfield. As he packs a bag and prepared to flee, he ends up at Billy’s flat and Billy takes him in his arms and tells him that he wasn’t alone.
Looking a broken Paul straight in the eyes, Billy assures him that nothing that has happened to him is his fault and consumed both with agony of what he went through and relief that someone understood him and was showing him genuine kindness, Paul crumbles into tears.
But can Billy reverse his decision to leave the Street?
Billy makes it clear that Paul will eventually have to face up to what had happened and take the next steps – but adds that he would be with him every step of the way. With Billy fighting his corner, will Paul be able to find the strength to speak out against Kel?
Or will Kel manage to manipulate him into silence? It remains to be seen where the story goes from here but Billy’s support will no doubt give Paul some much needed back-up.

Neighbours’ Mackenzie Hargreaves (Georgie Stone) has been desperately searching for the dad who cruelly abandoned her, but when she has the chance to face him will she be left feeling she’s made a terrible mistake?
Mackenzie had enlisted the help of Shane Rebecchi (Nicholas Coghlan) to track down her dad, but she was left feeling utterly betrayed when he revealed he had been instrumental in her father burning her belongings and turning his back on her in the first place.
She felt more lost and alone than ever, but refused to give up the fight to find him. But when she learns he’s been found, she suddenly realises just how tough it will be to look the man who hurt her so badly in the eye.
She fights the nerves at seeing Grant (Paul Mercurio) for the first time with Dipi (Sharon Johal) by her side.
But Mackenzie’s fears are confirmed when her dad reacts even worse than she imagined. He refuses to accept Mackenzie as female, and he calls her Michael.
She bites her tongue and begins a tentative conversation, and the pair begin to open up. Grant confesses he knew her mum had died, leading Mackenzie to demand to know why he left her alone at such a tough time.
Grant is defensive and delivers a heartbreaking blow – Mackenzie will always be his son, he will never see her as female.
Can Grant accept Mackenzie as his daughter? (Picture: Channel 5)
But Mackenzie is surprised when a white knight comes to her rescue – Shane steps up and gives Grant an angry talking to. He tells the ignorant man that being a father is about only being concerned that his children are happy and healthy. Nothing else matters.
Mackenzie tentatively returns after some convincing from Kirsha, and she and Grant sit down to finally begin father daughter talks. Will Mackenzie finally have the relationship with her father that she’s always wanted? Or could he be about to break her heart even more when he reveals why he’s really let her back into his life?

Emmerdale actress Sammy Winward has revealed that she was asked to return to the ITV soap as Katie Sugden’s ghost.
Katie was killed off in harrowing scenes back in 2015 when she discovered Robert (Ryan Hawley) had been having an affair with Aaron (Danny Miller). After a scuffle ensued between the two following Katie’s discovery, the floor gave way and she fell to her death.
Due to Katie’s corpse having been seen on-screen, chances of the character making a proper return to the soap are limited, but actress Sammy, 33, has revealed to Inside Soap that she was asked return to the Dales a couple of years back as a ghost.
She said: ‘About a year after I left Emmerdale, they asked me to return as a ghost.’
‘It was for a scene or two with Andy. I was working, so I couldn’t fit it in.’
However, while Sammy was unavailable at the time due to other commitments, she revealed she’d very much be up for making a brief return now.
‘I’d be up for a cheeky little ghost appearance now – if only Kelvin [Fletcher] was still in Emmerdale.
Katie’s death came as a shock to soap fans — especially considering she’d been a part of the soap for over 14 years. However, Sammy spoke about how she’s happy that Katie met her maker.
She said: ‘I get asked all the time when I’m coming back to Emmerdale, and I’m like, ‘I’m dead!’
‘I’m glad they killed Katie off – it meant it was more final for me. Now, I’m not always wondering if I should go back.’
‘When they told me, at the end of my time at Emmerdale, that Katie would be killed off, it made sense.
‘When I said to them that I wanted to leave, Katie and Andy were properly back together after all of that drama – and I don’t think she would have left him, unless she died.’
The truth’s about to come out to his dad Tony (Nick Pickard) too as he finally discovers Harry’s body – but just what did happen to him?
Here’s what you need to know…
Why did Breda kill Harry in Hollyoaks?
Tony’s set to discover where Harry’s remains are (Picture: Lime Pictures)
Breda killed Harry after learning that he was planning to go on the run from the police, leaving his newborn baby with single mum Sadie (Alexa Lee).
She has been targeting people she perceives to be bad fathers, feeling like God is telling her to rid the world of them – hence the reason she targeted Harry.
The character had been facing some pretty big dilemmas at the time of his death, with his relationship with James Nightingale (Gregory Finnigan) looking rocky, as well as potentially facing jail for a crime he didn’t commit, after his vehicle was used in the hit-and-run against Grace Black (Tamara Wall).
Sadie’s arrival and the news she was carrying his child only further added to his problems.
Prior to his death, however, he had new information which proved he wasn’t responsible for the crash, while Tony had also called him in a bid to repair their relationship.
However that didn’t stop Breda, whose most up to date information was that he planned to flee, thus abandoning his newborn child – and as a result stabbed Harry to death.
With Tony’s fate hanging in the balance, could Harry’s dad be the next to be dispatched?
Hollyoaks airs weeknights on Channel 4 at 6.30pm with new episodes on E4 at 7pm.

Debbie’s not been seen in Weatherfield for quite some time, but she’s there with some surprising news for Kevin as she informs him their Auntie Val has died and left her £200,000 – which she wants him to have.
Who is Kevin’s sister Debbie Webster in Coronation Street?
Debbie previously appeared in the show as a feisty teenager in the 80s (Picture: Rex Shutterstock)
Debbie Webster first arrived in Weatherfield in 1984 with Kevin and their dad Bill, four years after their mother Alison had died of breast cancer.
The teenager was only in the show for a few months but made her mark with storylines which saw her leaving school without qualifications as well as being involved in a motorbike crash.
When was Debbie Webster last in Coronation Street?
Debbie has been mentioned a number of times since departing Weatherfield (Picture: ITV)
She left with her dad in early 1985 after he married Elaine Prior and they all moved to Southampton – with Elaine offering Debbie a job at a new salon she was opening.
Although she’s not been in the soap since then she has been referenced from time to time.
When Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) went missing in 2010 Kevin rang Debbie to see if she had turned up there, and she also called Kevin in 2011 to inform him she had bought a villa in Turkey and wanted him and his son Jack (Kyran Bowes) to visit.
Who plays Debbie Webster in Coronation Street?
The role is played by actress Sue Devaney, who previously played Debbie as a teenager when the character was first in the show in the 80s.
Sue, now 52, will be familiar to fans of Casualty, in which she played Liz Harker from 1994-1997, while she’s also been in Dinnerladies, Shameless, Heartbeat, Jonny Briggs and River City.
The actress also has a string of stage credits to her name, including appearing in Mamma Mia! at the Blackpool Opera House in 2014.
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV at 7.30pm.

Speaking about one particular episode, Sarah Jayne told Metro.co.uk back in December: ‘So basically, this episode almost follows Mandy around the village, and she has lots of interactions with people with disabilities.
‘And I think for her, it cements that actually it’s not a thing – you can have a normal life.’

For over three decades, EastEnders has entertained the nation with high-octane drama, compelling storylines, and countless ‘Doof Doof’ cliffhangers. The BBC One soap is set to celebrate its 35th anniversary next February, but it’s about to reach an equally noteworthy milestone this evening, as it airs its 6000th episode.
For a soap to reach such a milestone is a staggering achievement — especially when you consider the way in which we consume telly has dramatically evolved over the last couple of years. However, in spite of the ever-changing world of entertainment, EastEnders continues to thrive, producing unmissable content on a daily basis — much like its been doing since it began all the way back in 1985.
The London-based serial drama has certainly been home to some of the most memorable TV moments not only in soap, but in British drama as a whole, so — with the 6000th instalment set to air tonight — we thought it only fair to honour the national institution’s special achievement by taking a look back at some of the episodes that will be etched into our minds for all of eternity.
‘Appy Christmas Ange!’
Christmas is a time for peace, love and good will. That is, unless you live in Albert Square! The festive season in Walford has resulted many an iconic moment, but there’s none more iconic than the very first, which saw Den Watts (Leslie Grantham) serve wife Angie (Anita Dobson) with divorce papers back in 1986.
In fact, it’s so iconic that it remains one of the most-watched moments in British telly history, with more than 30 million viewers tuning in to watch Den and Angie’s troublesome marriage culminate in such an epic fashion.
Marriages haven’t faired well in Walford ever since!
Sharon learns the truth about Michelle and Den
A friendship like Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Michelle Fowler’s (Susan Tully) is hard to come by, but the downside of having such a close pal is that the pain of betrayal stings all the more — something Sharon discovered the hard way back in 1989 when she learned that Den had fathered Michelle’s baby, Vicki.
In a special two-hander episode — the third of its kind — the truth finally came to light, as — worried about Sharon’s state of mind following Den’s ‘death’ — Michelle took it upon herself to reveal that Vicki was actually Sharon’s sister.
In typical Walford fashion, chaos and conflict ensued, and — although ’89 was a problematic year for the beloved soap — this particular instalment proved to be an absolute classic.
Sharongate
Hashtags didn’t exist back in the ’90s but, if they did, #Sharongate would’ve no doubt been a top trend considering it was all anyone could talk about in 1994.
In what is undoubtedly one of the most quintessential EastEnders moments of all time, Sharon’s dalliance with Phil (Steve McFadden) came to light via a recording which was played aloud in the Queen Vic for all those enjoying a pint to hear — including husband Grant (Ross Kemp)!
So much for faaaaaamily loyalty, eh lads?
The identity of Phil’s shooter revealed
The turn of the century brought with it a new era for ‘Enders — much of which was down to then executive producer John Yorke — and many of the soap’s most renowned episodes took place during this period, one of which included the resolution to the brilliant ‘Who Shot Phil?’ arc from 2001.
Phil (Steve McFadden) has made no shortage of enemies during his time on the Square, so trying to work out who put a bullet in him was no doubt a tall task for viewers. However — much like every secret in Walford — the truth eventually came out, and it do so in tremendous fashion, as Lisa Fowler (Lucy Benjamin) was revealed to have been the one who pulled the trigger.
The episode received acclaim, and the National Grid reported that the third highest power surge on record took place immediately following the ‘Doof Doof’, as a whopping 19.8 million viewers tuned in to find out which Walford resident had tried to put Phil down.
‘You ain’t my muvvah!’
The spectacular face-off between Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Zoe (Michelle Ryan) — and the iconic dialogue exchange penned by Tony Jordan — went down in telly history, as Kat revealed that Zoe was actually her daughter in an episode broadcast in 2001.
But am I trying to tell you that this is the most iconic moment in EastEnders history, though? Yes I aaaaaaam!
Dirty Den’s demise
Den Watts doesn’t do things by halves — and that includes dying! After a pretty iconic death scene back in ’89, the character made a return to the Square in 2003, and wasted little time in getting up to his old cheating ways once more — something which resulted in him meeting his maker for a second time, in a death scene that was even more spectacular than the first!
With Chrissie (Tracy Ann Oberman) having ensured Sharon was nearby to hear all of her dad’s misgivings, Den made a beeline for his wife but, before he could do any damage, Zoe whacked him with Pauline Fowler’s (Wendy Richard) doorstop — an ironic choice of weapon considering Pauline made her dislike for Den known on a daily basis back in the ’80s!
Chrissie struck the final blow, thus ensuring that Den was well and truly dead this time.
Max and Stacey’s affair comes to light
Affairs are commonplace in soaps, and Max’s (Jake Wood) dalliance with Stacey (Lacey Turner) might just be the most renowned to have ever taken place in Albert Square — and much of this reputation is down to the unforgettable scenes in which the pair’s infidelity came to light.
Yes, in iconic scenes, Tanya (Jo Joyner) and Bradley (Charlie Clements) learned of their spouses’ unfaithful ways via a DVD made by Lauren Branning (Madeleine Duggan) — a home video which featured Max and Stacey getting cosy on the latter’s wedding day.
Another Christmas classic!
Danielle dies after reuniting with mum Ronnie
Mere moments after Ronnie (Samantha Womack) learned that Danielle Jones (Lauren Crace) was, in fact, the biological daughter she’d been searching an eternity for, disaster struck, as Danielle collided with Janine’s (Charlie Brooks) car during a rather sublime episode back in 2009.
An incredibly powerful — and somewhat Shakespearean — end to one of EastEnders’ greatest ever storylines, and Danielle’s death became instrumental in cementing Ronnie as one of soap’s most tragic characters — a reputation she held until her untimely demise in 2017.
Pat and Peggy get drunk in the ice-cream van
(Picture: BBC)
Pat Butcher (Pam St. Clement) and Peggy Mitchell’s (Barbara Windsor) feud was certainly one for the ages but, when they weren’t busy slapping each other daaahn and calling each other every name under the sun, they were actually the best of friends — as proven during a hilarious episode in 2009 when the pair of legends got tipsy inside an ice-cream van — much to Phil’s dismay!
The first live episode
Murder mysteries are a huge part of EastEnders’ bread and butter, and ‘Who Killed Archie?’ is certainly one of the best the BBC soap has had to offer. With Archie (Larry Lamb) having riled plenty of Walford residents up the wrong way, any of the mainstays could’ve been responsible for his demise, which is what made the shocking reveal during a special live episode to celebrate the soap’s 25th anniversary all the more delicious. Stacey confessing to having murdered the Mitchell patriarch was truly a game-changing moment for the soap.
We’re still in shock tbh.
Johnny comes out
While the car crashes and rooftop tumbles never fail to entertain, EastEnders is undoubtedly at its best when it deals with character-driven conflict and drama, and that was very much the case back in 2014, when — days after their arrival on the Square — an emotional Johnny Carter (Sam Strike) came out to dad Mick (Danny Dyer) in the living room of the Queen Vic.
It wasn’t part of a big reveal, nor was it sensationalised for dramatic purposes, but rather it was nothing more than a beautifully written conversation between father and son — and it’s this simplicity that aided in making it such a revolutionary moment not only for the Carters, but also for the soap.
Lucy’s killer revealed
Dominic Treadwell-Collins did wonders with EastEnders during 2014 — a year that remains one of the soap’s greatest to date — and the whodunnit following Lucy Beale’s (Hetti Bywater) murder was without a doubt his crowning achievement.
‘Who Killed Lucy?’ was superbly storylined and executed and, as a result, viewers were at their wits end trying to work out who exactly was responsible for the young girl’s death.
The moment of truth came during a sublime flashback episode broadcast on the soap’s 30th anniversary in 2015, as — during a live segment — Jane (Laurie Brett) discovered Bobby (Eliot Carrington) looming over his sister’s corpse with a jewellery box in hand.
The nation was shook.
Shakil’s Funeral
There wasn’t a dry eye left in the country as Carmel Kazemi (Bonnie Langford) buried her son Shakil (Shaheen Jafargholi) back in 2018. During a special episode, EastEnders broke from the norm in an attempt to highlight the dangers of knife-crime.
The Walford regulars gathered to bid farewell to their fallen friend, and — whilst in the graveyard — they were joined by the relatives of real-life knife-crime victims. A tear-jerking — but highly effective — scene.
John Yorke’s return to the soap helped in restoring it to its former glory, and the knife-crime storyline — and this episode in particular —was a highlight of the titan producer’s latest stint, for sure.
Linda takes down Stuart
Much like ‘Who Shot Phil?’ and ‘Who Killed Lucy?’, the ‘Who Shot Stuart?’ narrative culminated in an epic fashion, as — determined to free her beloved Mick from prison and get her family back together for Christmas — Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) went to extreme lengths in order to extract the truth from the villainous Stuart Highway (Ricky Champ) in a tense two-hander episode that featured award-worthy performances from the two leading actors.
The two-hander formula isn’t employed all that often, but it’s episodes such as this one that prove just how effective it can be.
Walford Pride
Walford’s first ever Pride march took place earlier this year in a magnificent episode which demonstrated that — in 2019 — EastEnders still has what it takes to make history. During the instalment, many Walford regulars congregated to celebrate the special event and, with the help of Tina (Luisa Bradshaw-White), Bernie (Clair Norris) was able to fully embrace her sexuality — a narrative which juxtaposed nicely with Callum’s (Tony Clay) ongoing struggle.
The Queen Vic siege
There’s nothing quite like a siege to ruin your already ruined wedding day, but that’s exactly what happened when — following Whitney (Shona McGarty) and Callum’s ceremony-that-never-was — Hunter Owen (Charlie Winter) took those in the Vic hostage during an extraordinary episode broadcast earlier this year.
With a stellar script, sublime direction and a superb slow-motion sequence, the siege instalment became an instant classic.
It’s been quite some time since EastEnders was considered main event telly, and — considering we’re living in an era dominated by streaming services and on-demand entertainment — many figured we’d never live to see the day were it would be again. This episode proved otherwise and, to use that old EastEnders slogan, everyone is talking about it again as a result.
It’s been quite some time since we last saw her, but Dot Branning (June Brown) makes her highly-anticipated return to EastEnders tonight — and she’s not alone! Yes, granddaughter Dotty Cotton (Milly Zero) will arrive back in Walford with her.
With Bex’s (Jasmine Armfield) final day in Walford having arrived, Sonia’s (Natalie Cassidy) determined to make sure her daughter enjoys herself before setting off for Uni, and thus she arranges a surprise party. Of course, a party is the last thing Bex wants, but she agrees to attend, nonetheless.
Before she departs for The Queen Vic, Bex shares a nice moment with Stuart (Ricky Champ), as he wishes her good luck. However, the pair are interrupted by Dot, who returns unnanounced — much to everyone’s delight.
Stuart’s pleased to see the Walford icon, and gives her a hug — as does Tiffany (Maisie Smith). However, Dot’s not alone, as she’s brought granddaughter Dotty back with her.
As Dot gives her nearest and dearest an update on what she’s been getting up to over the past couple of months, Tiffany is wary when she discovers that Dotty will be staying in Walford for the duration.
With Dotty having something of a reputation for causing trouble — and that’s putting it mildly — who could blame Tiffany for being concerned over the young woman’s motives?
The question is: will Dotty give Tiffany reason to be suspicious?
What is it that’s brought Dotty back to Walford?
EastEnders continues on Thursday 3rd October at 7:30pm on BBC One.
Kerry Wyatt (Laura Norton) has been struggling to keep a lid on the fact that both her and Amy (Natalie Ann Jamieson) were responsible for the factory fire which killed Frank Clayton (Michael Praed) in Emmerdale, but the truth is set to out tonight in explosive fashion, as Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) uncovers her friend’s involvement in the deadly blaze that took her dad’s life.
After learning that a journalist had contacted Kerry to discuss her fundraising activities, Tracy set up an interview on her mate’s behalf — hoping to get her the acclaim she deserves for what she believes to have been a kind and generous act. However, given that Kerry’s charitable venture was nothing more than a means of averting suspicion away from her and Amy, it’s no surprise that she doesn’t want media attention.
Tonight, matters are made much worse when Frank’s keyring falls from Kerry’s bag — and Tracy notices. Confused as to why her mate is in possession of such an item, she proceeds to question both Kerry and Amy about it — but Kerry’s got enough to deal with, as she prepares to be interviewed by the Hotten Courier. Meanwhile, Tracy does some investigating of her own, as she searches Kerry’s bedroom. She stumbles upon passports and one-way tickets — and she’s incredibly confused as a result.
Tracy confronts Kerry with her discovery, and, left with no other choice, Kerry admits that she was the one responsible for Frank’s death — leaving Tracy reeling. She claims that it was her alone that caused the fire, but — when Amy shows up — Tracy manages to get the whole truth about what really happened.
Desperate to keep a lid on their murderous secret, Kerry and Amy proceed to lock Tracy in. However, Tracy soon seizes a moment of opportunity, thus making a run for it. Kerry speeds after her but, during the chase, she stumbles and falls — hitting her head hard.
Tracy is horrified when she realises what’s transpired — but will she go get help?
Or will she leave the young woman to die?
Is this the end of the road for Kerry?
Emmerdale continues on Thursday 3rd October at 7pm and 8pm on ITV.
It’s been a tough couple of months for Bex Fowler (Jasmine Armfield) in EastEnders. She’s struggling to cope as a result of the immense pressure she’s been under and tonight’s episode will see the young woman attempt to take her own life.
Unable to listen Sonia (Natalie Cassidy) going on about Uni, viewers saw Bex take advantange of a distraction earlier this week when she helped plan Louise’s (Tilly Keeper) baby shower. However, the event did little to cheer her up — and Lisa (Lucy Benjamin) began to worry about her. With Sonia pushing her to prepare for Uni, Bex ultimately sold her guitar, and reminisced about both Shaki (Shaheen Jafargholi) and her time in Walford.
Tonight, Sonia prepares for Bex’s final day in Walford, and she gets everything in order for the surprise party she’s arranged. When Bex gets wind of the party, she reluctantly agrees to go and, during the celebrations, she feigns enjoyment.
Lisa picks up on the fact that Bex isn’t okay and thus attempts to persuade her to open up to her mum. However, Bex brushes Lisa off and makes a speech, before sneaking off.
With the stress of everything that she’s had to deal with over the past few months — not to mention the thought of leaving Walford weighing on her mind — Bex finds herself unable to cope, and —unbeknown to those enjoying themselves at the party — she’s planning to take her own life.
The following day, Lisa’s concerns about Bex continue to weigh on her mind and, as a result, she urges Louise to call her. Meanwhile, a shocked Sonia discovers Bex unresponsive in bed.
EastEnders is working with Samaritans on the storyline, and Executive Producer Jon Sen told Metro.co.uk: ‘We wanted to take Bex on a journey which accurately reflected the crises facing many young people today – many of whom, like Bex, struggle under the mounting pressures placed on teenagers today. Having worked closely with Samaritans, our wish is that by telling this story we can encourage others in Bex’s position to realise there’s always help and there’s always hope and we hope that others will be encouraged to start a conversation if they are worried about someone they know.’
EastEnders continues on Thursday 3rd October at 7:30pm on BBC One.
