It’s been quite some time since we last saw him, but Martin Fowler (James Bye) made a shocking return to EastEnders tonight after Sonia (Natalie Cassidy) informed him of Bex’s (Jasmine Armfield) suicide attempt, and — in addition to worrying about his daughter — its pretty clear that he’s gunning for Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden).

Following Sonia having discovered Bex unresponsive in bed at the end of the previous episode, the paramedics arrived tonight and tended to young girl. As she was taken away in the ambulance, Sonia realised that she needed to inform Martin about what’s transpired, and thus she called him. However, his phone went straight to voicemail — much to her dismay.

Meanwhile, at the Slaters’, Kush (Davood Ghadami), Jean (Gillian Wright) and Kat (Jessie Wallace) deliberated over Martin’s inability to return to the Square considering the circumstances which forced him to leave in the first place, but nonetheless Kush was adamant that he needed to know what happened.

Over at the hospital, Sonia informed Bex that Martin was on his way — a lie which she later regretted. However, Max (Jake Wood) and Stuart (Ricky Champ) both applauded her for giving Bex something to look forward to, but Sonia wasn’t so sure, and the discussion of Martin unleashed the anger she feels towards her ex-husband.

She berated Martin for not answering her calls, claiming that he’s ‘made his choice’ and that he doesn’t care about his daughter.

However, unbeknown to Sonia, Martin was already back on the Square.

As Ben grew concerned over the threat he’d received off Kheerat and Jags Panesar (Jaz Deol and Amar Adatia), an angry Martin — in cognito, of course — watched from afar.

Bex is the reason he’s back, but will he be out for retribution on Ben also?

EastEnders continues on Monday 7th October at 8pm on BBC One.
